I am a free enterpriser. We have various levels of government in which we participate by having votes. Each level of government has responsibilities and duties appropriate for their own level. To tamper with this reality is to cause problems.
Did I also mention that I am a socialist? Let me qualify that remark. I am a concentric socialist. Afterall, we are social beings. The greatest social institution is the family. None of us charged our young children for the food and shelter that we provided them. None of us got bent out of shape that our children weren't doing their share around the house (actually, probably a little when they were teenagers) In short we sacrificed and we did so willingly. That is the family circle and Marx's maxim would apply perfectly. "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." Outside that circle we help other relatives and neighbors. We aid our communities and our churches. Willingly. The socialism within us is just like a point of light that grows dimmer the farther it goes out. As we move out across the concentric circles to state or federal levels, our influence and thus our socialism wanes. At these social distances we can only participate in the things that we all have in common. We need a federal government to represent us to other nations. We need federal government to build and maintain the armies that protect us. We need federal government to ensure that the constitution is not abrogated. And finally, we need the federal governement to create and enforce the laws of a just society. The concept of a federal government showing compassion is an illusion. To micromanage our lives is not only impossible but it is dangerous. Trying to impose socialism on such grand scales can only lead to ruin as the structure of the country, built from smaller units of families and communities, becomes compromised.
